Renewable Energy, Biodiversity, Soil

Collecting the latest news and research in Health and the Environment.

Sometimes it seems like the large corporations, through advertising, want us to eat and drink processed junkfood, watch drivel on TV, work as unfulfilled cogs in giant corporate machines and become very unhealthy. Fortunately, some people are still funded to do meaningful research into healthy food and drink, and we do have some choices about what to buy, cook and grow.

The research mostly falls into two categories:
1. Analysis of food content and its effect on health.
2. Studying large populations over years or decades to relate their diet to health.

Here we try to gather the best news stories about the production and processing of food, and the larger picture of human and planetary health.

The most striking single piece of research I've found is the six years increase in life expectancy of North Americans during the depression of the 1930s. This was decades before TV advertising, and yet already over-consumption of saturated animal fats, animal protein and refined carbohydrates had been destroying people's health.

Occasionally the growers of a particular crop will sponsor research into the nutritional benefits of their product. Recent exmaples include pomegranates and blueberries. The results are TRUE, but can be misleading. For example, blueberries have less antioxidants per 100 grams than either strawberries or blackberries (BBC documentary). Also, it doesn't matter which you eat, the antioxidant levels in your blood are equally enhanced by any of the soft fruit.

The lesson from the 1930s is clear. Research into food and health is interesting and on-going. We keep discovering more. But what is certain is that large amounts of some foods are very, very bad for us.

News we have been able to gather focusses on healthy organic farming, foods and diet; biodiversity in environment policy; renewable resources, especially energy and electric vehicles; Exercise, diet and lifestyle choices that improve health and wellbeing; Nutritional and fitness research that assists educated decision-making for oneself, one's family, friends and institutions. Research into climate change, and the vested interests that attempt to rubbish the facts, the knowledge and the planet for the pursuit of profit and monopoly.
